‘Panorama’ is a bee balm variety with a citrus-like fragrance and brilliant pink blooms. Plants will flower in the second year and will flower more prolific in full sun. Picking flowers will encourage more bloom, for bushier plants pinch back new tips in spring.
Bee balm (above ground) is edible and medicinal, as well as a pretty cut flower. Harvest leaves for tea just before blooming and dry them for best flavour. Fresh flowers can be used as attractive garnish for salads, fruit salads or cakes. Dried leaves and flowers are also useful in sachets and potpourri.
Bee balm is a antiseptic and stimulant. Medicinal use (internally) to treat colds, headaches, and gastric disorders, to lower fevers and treat sore throats. It is also said to relieve flatulence, nausea, menstrual pain and insomnia. Steam inhalation of steeped bee balm can be used for sore throats. Externally, it is a medicinal application for skin infections.
